Line is run by IMPCT Ltd in the UK. Line is the data controller for your account data. For the calls, messages and contacts in your workspace, your business is the controller and Line is the processor.

## Who controls which data

| Data | Controller | Processor |
|---|---|---|
| Your sign-in, profile and billing details | Line | — |
| Your customers' calls, messages, recordings and contact details | Your business | Line |

As the controller of your customers' data, your business must:

- Have a lawful basis to call and text your contacts.
- Give your contacts your own privacy notice.
- Answer requests from your contacts. Line helps when you need it.
- Follow opt-out and consent rules.

Line processes this data only on your instructions, under the [Data Processing Agreement](https://useline.io/legal/dpa). The [privacy policy](https://useline.io/legal/privacy) gives the full details. The [sub-processor list](https://useline.io/legal/sub-processors) names the companies that help Line run the service.

## Set how long Line keeps communication data

By default, Line keeps messages, calls and transcripts while the workspace is open. An Owner can set a shorter period.

1. Open **Settings**.
2. Select **Organisation Settings**.
3. In **Communication retention**, select **1 year**, **2 years**, **6 years** or **Life of workspace**.

Line saves the change at once. Line then removes messages, calls, transcripts and their files when they are older than this period.

> **Important:** Removed data cannot be recovered. Export the data that you want to keep first.

## What Line keeps after a workspace closes

- Line erases a closed workspace, with its contacts, messages, calls and files, 30 days after it closes.
- Stripe keeps billing invoices for 7 years for UK tax records.
